I’d like to quickly introduce Chajiko, who ended up writing most of this blog post. She is our new costume designer and cosplay enthusiast. Chajiko is a skilled seamstress and has a ton of experience with costuming. We’re very excited to have her blog for Costume Craze — look for her great costume stories soon! She’ll also be writing for MyDisguises, a fun costume blog sponsored by Costume Craze. Best of all, she knows a lot more about Storm than I do. Take it away, Chajiko!
Storm: the original female X-Man, the generous, kind hearted yet stern, charmingly naïve and immensely powerful goddess of the weather.
Possibly the most well-known female superhero, Storm has been a popular costume request for a lot of years, with very little result. At last, however, we have no less than three Storm costumes in this year’s new Women of Marvel line-up!
Encompassing many of Storm’s trademark looks, these costumes reflect not only the classic Storm as she was introduced in Giant Size X-Men #1 (1975), but also recall lines of the costume she wore in the recent X-Men movies. While Storm’s usual look wasn’t a miniskirt, the dark fabric and metallic accents are very much a part of her original costume.
This particular look would be easy to emulate with very little (if any) changes to these costumes as they are! Regardless of what certain well-known super-suit designers say, a cape is essential to a classic super hero.
Add a long black cape (or even a silver or white cape—Storm changed it up a lot, why shouldn’t you?) on top of any of the three new Storm costumes to instantly amp up your look.
Another one of Storm’s trademarks were her thigh-high boots. These are a little harder, as they’re not something one normally has in the closet ready to wear. However, the look can easily be imitated with a pair of black or silver thigh-high stockings for a fraction of the price of actual boots.
The real key in dressing as Storm is in the details. Storm’s unmistakable mane of white hair is essential if you want to make your costume unforgettable. Storm is mainly known for two look: the long, flowing white hair of her original incarnation and the short, whispy bob that Halle Berry sported in the films.
The less well known (but undeniably awesome) 80’s sort of punk incarnation of Storm wore her hair in a magnificent white Mohawk. Unfortunately the Mohawk is out of the question for most of us, but the other two styles are easily attained! We carry three ideal wigs for either Storm style, and they both go swell with the costumes! Our Spirit wig and Chic White & Silver Wig are perfect for that classic Storm look, while our Venturous Storm wig is great for the Halle Berry version.
The very last touch needed to add that final bit of verisimilitude to an already convincing costume comes in the form of white contact lenses. Storm’s eyes, when calling on her mutant power to control the weather, go blank—like a white film has been drawn over her irises. We will have colored contact lenses in stock very soon!
See how easy it is to be awesome? Go Mutant this year! — Chajiko
Turns out, this is not “sexy Wolverine” — it’s Wild Thing, Wolverine’s daughter! In an alternate universe, she’s the daughter of Wolverine and Elektra. Interesting! I wonder if X-23 feels left out?
