Disney Rapunzel Movie in the Works

by Sherene on Monday, August 3rd, 2009

As a child, I listened to audio versions of classic fairytales. One of my favorites was “Rapunzel” and I remember laying on the floor on rainy afternoons, closing my eyes as the narrator’s storytelling unfolded in my imagination.

I felt like I was there in the tower when the prince climbed Rapunzel’s hair only to find himself face to face with the witch. I was devasted when he was blinded from his tower fall and overjoyed when he was reunited with Rapunzel and regained his sight. What a story!

As an adult, with bills, errands and work to worry about, it’s a little harder to fire up the imagination without a little help from Disney so I was extremely excited to see these concept art photos for Disney’s animated film version of “Rapunzel”:

“…this new telling of the classic fairy tale, will transport audiences to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair, lots of hair.”

Rapunzel will be in theaters just in time for the Holidays, in December 2010. Until then, maybe dad will let me borrow those old fairytale story audios…I think I’d like to let down my hair and take a whimsical journey through my imagination.

But before I go, here are my suggestions for a child and adult Rapunzel costume:

Protesters Go Ape

by Sherene on Friday, July 17th, 2009

Monkeys belong in Jungles and Rainforests. But what if those jungles and rainforests are being threatened?

The monkeys hang up their vines and go ape in the city.

Greenpeace protesters dressed as orangutans scaled the London headquarters of Unilever (international manufacturer of food, home care and personal care products) to protest their trading with suppliers in Indonesia who destroy the rainforest where the apes live in order to grow palm oil.

We don’t necessarily suggest that you scale tall buildings in ape suits and engage in questionable monkey business to protest anything, but we do advise you to check out our wild selection of ape costumes…you’ll go bananas over our great prices!

Harry Potter Actor Ready to Quit

by Sherene on Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Emma Watson, Harry Potter’s Hermione, says she does not have a ‘burning passion’ for acting and may give up her film career once she finishes the Harry Potter movies.

Watson told America’s Teen Vogue that she wouldn’t care to act again unless she felt as strongly about the character as she did Hermoine.

She added that she was struggling with the pressure of promoting “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, to be released next month, as well as filming the seventh and eighth Potter films.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired in my life,’ Watson said. ‘I literally wear my pajama bottoms to set. I roll out of bed and put on a hoodie and some Ugg boots.’

Watson will be attending college this fall but is keeping the school a secret for now because she wants to enjoy some anonymity. But it’s believed that Cambridge University and Yale in the U.S. are in the running for her English literature and art degree.

Whether Watson decides to abandon acting or not, she’ll always be Hermione to us. Here’s a clip of Watson in the new Harry Potter film coming to theaters on Wednesday, July 15th:

Dubious “Civony” Game Uses Costume Photo

by Matthew on Friday, May 1st, 2009

This is an interesting story. Recently, ads for an online game called “Civony” have been popping up like mad across all gaming websites and tech blogs. The ad features the beautiful woman shown above and encourages you to sign up and “save your queen.”

What’s funny about this is that the model in the photo is actually for our Adult Forest Fairy Costume. LOL! Adult Forest Fairy Costume
All they did was flip it horizontally and increase the hue a bit. Same picture!

It turns out, despite the advertising, that there’s actually no queen to rescue in the game at all.

After you join, they tell you in their FAQ:
How do I get my queen?
There is no queen in this game, the ad you saw is for marketing purposes and seems to be highly effective by the number of times this question has come up.

Wow! How funny. They’ve been totally busted by several gaming bloggers (Jeff Haines & Kevin Sung)

Kevin Sung sums it up quite well:

“Upon clicking the ad, you’re directed to sign up for an account. Then, you can start building your kingdom, slowly. But don’t worry. If you get bored, you can chat. It only costs $0.30 per line. Better cut down on those ‘LOLs.’ As for the banners and landing page? All lies. Horrible, horrible lies. There are no wenches. There is no queen.”

According to Sung, another legal issue here is that Civony totally copies the look and font of Civilization, a legitimate game, and also uses images from Age of Kings.

Heh, somewhere, out there, a lawyer is laughing at all the money he’s about to make over this. Here at Costume Craze, we’re just shaking our heads at the oddness of it all.

Huge Tree Falls in our Parking Lot

by Matthew on Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Fallen Tree

Check out this giant tree that fell in our parking lot! It fell last night when the parking lot was empty, so thankfully no one was injured and no cars were smashed.

I can’t believe it’s the middle of April and we’re STILL getting lots of snow. We had a big snow storm last night, which apparently was just too much for the poor tree.

A local tree removal service is coming soon to haul it away. Pretty amazing!

From Watchmen to Freddy Krueger

by Matthew on Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

It looks like the Nightmare on Elm Street remake is more than a bad dream. Jackie Earle Haley has been cast as the new Freddy Krueger!

He recently played Rorschach in the Watchmen movie, and he was chosen to play Freddy because he’s so good at acting behind a mask.

“Nightmare” Director Samuel Bayer explains his reasoning for casting Haley in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter:

“Looking at his performance in ‘Watchmen,’ here’s a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him,” said Bayer of the actor. “And in Nightmare,’ he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character.”

I’m wondering why they didn’t stick with Robert Englund, the original Freddy? It’s not like his age matters at all, especially behind all that latex. Although, I’d say Haley is a good choice. He definitely has a certain creepy look about him.

Jackie Earle Haley

It gave me an idea. I think a great Halloween costume this year would be to make a Watchmen/Freddy Krueger crossover costume.

Just take our Rorschach costume and add Freddy Krueger’s hat and razor glove – or add Rorschach’s mask to a Freddy Krueger costume and be Jackie Earle Haley for Halloween!

LOL, that would be awesome! What do you think?
